May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, and there’s no better time to revisit the importance of safe riding practices. With great weather year-round in the Sunshine State, motorcycles are popular. However, riding comes with inherent risks that all riders must take seriously.
At the Winston Law Firm, our team, led by Founding Partner Brad Winston, has witnessed the devastating consequences motorcycle accidents can have on victims and their families. This month, Mr. Winston shares some of his tips to help prevent crashes and injuries on our roads. You can also download his free motorcycle guide.
Gear Up for Safety
No matter how experienced you are, always wear a Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmet and protective riding gear like a jacket, pants, boots, and gloves. Even though helmets aren’t required in Florida (with some exceptions), they are recommended. In the event of a crash, this gear can literally save your life by preventing serious injuries.
Obey Traffic Laws
As a motorcyclist, you must follow traffic laws like other drivers. This means obeying speed limits, using turn signals, stopping at red lights and stop signs, and never driving impaired. Defensive driving and staying alert are also crucial, as other drivers may not see you.
Avoid Road Hazards
Be on the lookout for poor road conditions like potholes, debris, slick surfaces, or uneven pavement that could cause you to lose control. Even cut grass on a roadway can be dangerous. Remember to give yourself plenty of space from other vehicles, and never ride in a driver’s blind spot.
Get Proper Training
Taking a motorcycle safety course taught by certified instructors is the best way to learn safe riding practices and techniques. The State of Florida requires that all new riders take an accredited course. It’s the law. These courses provide essential real-world tips for new and experienced riders alike.
Maintain Your Motorcycle
Routine inspection and maintenance are critical for your bike’s safe operation. Get tune-ups per your manufacturer’s recommendations, check tires, brakes, and lights, and never ride with any mechanical issues. In fact, it is recommended that you check your bike every time before you ride.
Other Drivers: Stay Alert for Motorcycles
Of course, motorcyclists aren’t the only ones responsible for safety. All drivers must remain aware of motorcycles around them due to their smaller profiles and vulnerability.
Always check your blind spots and mirrors before changing lanes or turning. Give motorcycle riders ample space, and never tailgate. If you’re stuck behind a motorcycle, be patient and keep a safe following distance.
The Devastating Toll of Motorcycle Accidents
Despite taking every precaution, motorcycle accidents can still happen due to other drivers’ negligence. The consequences can be life-altering:
– In 2020, over 5,500 motorcyclists were killed in crashes in the U.S.
– Florida saw 531 motorcycle fatalities that same year.
– Motorcycle riders are 28 times more likely to die in a crash than occupants of other vehicles.
– Head injuries are the leading cause of death in motorcycle accidents.
– The lifetime economic cost of just one critically injured motorcyclist can reach $1.5 million or more due to medical expenses and lost wages.
Your Rights as an Injured Rider
If you or a loved one were injured in a motorcycle accident caused by someone else’s negligence, you may be entitled to compensation. Don’t go it alone against aggressive insurance companies.
