$8.8 million was awarded to Wilson Torres and his family
$8.8 million was awarded to Wilson Torres and his family by a Miami-Dade County jury after Torres’ wife was killed in a car accident in 2008.
Torres was driving his vehicle with his wife and passenger, Myriam del Socorro Lopez, on Bird Road when 17 year old Luis Cruz-Govin struck their car killing Lopez on impact and severely injuring Torres. The 17 year old was speeding and weaving in and out of traffic and was also believed to be texting.
Cruz-Govin was initially only fined $2,000, his license was suspended for 6 months, but wasn’t charged with vehicular homicide. According to Torres’ lawyer, Alan Goldfarb, “This case should bring an awareness to Florida of the problems that texting and driving have done, and will continue to do…“It has to stop. It’s a tragic situation that kills.”
