Being safe on Spring Break
Spring is here, and the spring breakers are too. That means South Florida beaches are packed, bars are overflowing with college students, and cops are busy breaking up fights.
You don’t want to get caught up in the melee. For most, the key to a peaceful spring break is to pack up the family and head out of town for a week.
But even then, you have to beware the dangers that lurk on roadways, in bodies of water and theme parks. The vacation mind sees no threat. All we have to do is read our Facebook feeds for vacation accidents.
Whether you go away or stay at home, we offer some advice to keep you and your loved ones safe.
Dangers at Home
If you’re hosting friends, family, and colleagues, make sure to fix broken equipment and eliminate any possible hazards before they visit. And if a pool party is planned, organize pool watchers to stand guard and ensure your guests’ safety.
Dangers on the Road
If you plan a little road tripping, make sure to have your car checked before hitting the road. Check your tires to make sure they’re up to the challenge. You don’t want to get a flat far from the nearest exit and car repair.
Also, stay focused on the drive. Spring break means there are a lot of younger drivers on the road who might be distracted or driving under the influence. If you’re alert, you can avoid problems caused by other drivers.
Car-Sharing Services
If your kids are spring breakers, encourage them to use ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft instead of being behind the wheel. Many companies are offering discounts. Some parents are opting to foot the bill for rides to guarantee their children’s safety.
Hitting the High Seas
We love cruising, but ships are not accident-free zones. In February, a Royal Caribbean passenger, for example, broke his pelvis in a 20-foot fall from the ship’s Sky Pad bungee trampoline aboard the Mariner of the Seas ship. Now he’s suing for $10 million.
Point being, just because you’re on vacation doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be careful. Don’t take unnecessary risks. Be cautious. Make sure to read all waivers carefully.
Travel Insurance
Spend a few extra bucks and get travel insurance. The extra expense will be well worth it if you miss a flight or land in the emergency room. Good travel insurance will cover your costs.
Follow these quick tips:
- Be aware of your surroundings.
- Don’t drink and drive.
- If you’re heading to the beach, be cautious of rip currents and follow lifeguard instructions.
