Eleven people lost their lives in accidents
The visibility on Interstate 75 near Gainesville, Florida was next to zero when car accidents began happening around 3:45 a.m. Sunday morning.
Severe smoke from a nearby brush fire coated the northbound and southbound lanes of the highway. Drivers were unable to determine any objects past the front of their own vehicles. There were 19 separate cars that were involved in collisions on both sides of Interstate 75.
Emergency personnel navigated through the wreckage to aid injured individuals. Eleven people lost their lives in accidents, and 18 more were taken to hospitals with varying degrees of injuries. An investigation into the accidents is still ongoing, and could possibly turn into a criminal one based on evidence of the brush fire.
