In Oakland Park on New Years Day, a Broward County Sheriff officer, John Blackwelder, 45, was killed while riding his motorcycle.
While off duty, Blackwelder was driving on East Commercial Boulevard when a vehicle driving the opposite direction turned left into his path. He was pronounced dead by paramedics at the scene.
Stajka Vangov, 75, of Fort Lauderdale, was the driver of the other vehicle. Blackwelder worked in the Pompano Beach district, and served the Broward Sheriff’s Office from 2000-2007 and then again starting in 2010.
He leaves behind his two teenage children. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the victim’s family.
